A young boy enters the room timidly and takes a seat on the soft, plushy couch sitting alone in the corner of the room. Throwing a wary glance at the interviewer, he flashes the latter a small smile. Based on his mannerisms, he seems a tad uncomfortable....

All kids brought here are normally checked before they can be admitted to makes sure that none can sneak past. If one does, it can put everyone in danger. And in that case, a lot of people can die as a result of it.

[Shivering slightly, the boy’s voice grew soft.]

It’s true though…I’m not him. But people still always want to see him and not me.
I guess it’s because he’s older and louder, but I don’t see how that changes anything. We’re only a year apart.
But, he always has to be the leader, the head, and the hero in the spotlight. Alphred the one who makes everyone happy! Alphred the one who fixes everyone's problems! And I-I…..I’m just his brother.

[A sparkle of excitement and gratitude fills his eyes as the boy struggles to begin. Matthew pauses for a few moments to brainstorm on what he wants to be called.
He seems to have forgotten about his earlier outburst. Or maybe, he never realized that he had one? Regardless, he smiles a few seconds after with an air of accomplishment. It appears that he came up with an answer.]
Umm....ok. I'm Matthew and you can call me....

[Wincing with dissatisfaction, the boy's eyes drop to the floor. Muttering something about failure, he bites down on his lip. His shoulders sag slightly as his grip tightens around his little bear. He doesn't seem very happy anymore.]
I-I'm sorry. I'm not really used to being acknowledged, let alone being noticed. So, it's hard for me to come up with a name that I'd like to be called. I've never been the impromptu kind of person...Normally, they just call me 'kid' or 'that kid's brother.' Or when they want to joke around with me, they call me ' The little detective' or ' Sherlock Jones'. Al thinks it's for fun but I know it's meant as an insult. They mean it in the same way as one would say 'smart aleck'. It's like how they call him 'Little hero.' He thinks they mean it but... [He winces.] Never mind. Let's just say he can never take their hints.
All in all, I've never really been called anything seriously or given the choice to choose what I want to be called. Not many people remember my name.
But you know.....
[He muses aloud.]
I appreciate that you wanted to give me a name and bothered with my opinion. It makes me feel really happy.
S-Sometimes.... I feel like that little nameless shadow that glides along the walls. It stays behind you 24/7 but never says a word.

No matter how much it wants to escape and be happy as well, it can never acquire any real 'independence' (as my brother always says). No matter how much it tries to speak, it's never heard. Because when you look at it, it's always forced to face the other way. A-And from that, all you see is a blob sembling someone else. But when it looks at you, you're facing the other way. And it can't do anything but follow along timidly behind.
It is and....always will.... be dependent on you to exist.
S-Sometimes the shadow feels bad and alone, but you never see its face so you never know. B-but when you feel down, everyone can see your face. And as you sit alone in a corner... your shadow longs to help. After all, no one should go through the same things it felt...that feeling of genuinely being unable to do anything for anyone....
The little shadow wants to make you feel like you have someone to comfort you. It want to embrace you and make you feel better!
But..... It doesn't know how to.
So in the end, it just sits there in its little corner and waits for you to feel better. Then, it follows along behind you just as it always does.
But if it could ever say something that was heard by everyone, it's message would probably be to stop saying that you're alone. Next time you feel hurt, remember your shadow is there..... It may not have a name or a voice but.... It still exists. And it's always there walking behind you, though you may not see it all the time. It never left or even thought about doing so.

I have to keep a lookout for him, even if he won't listen. But I know it won't be of use.... It never is! Talking never works with him; he refuses to learn by anything but action.
I can only hope that he won't do anything too stupid.

No, they really scare me.
There's a lot of news about Goldsbloom; there's a decent amount of news about Whitestag; I know nothing about Silverhollow. Nobody wants to say anything about them, good or bad. One man who people claimed was insane tried and said that the head was planning something.
The next day, he was said to have died in an accident.
All I do know from experience is, there was a man that came from Silverhollow who wanted to adopt us. I didn't get to meet him, but Al did. Al said he seemed ok, a bit weird but fine. But as he left, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. His smile.... It was the smile that the adults gave me when I asked a question. It was filled with smug confidence and amusement at a kid asking something. I also saw that smile on their faces when those people insult Al without him knowing or when he says he wants to be a hero. It's unnerving....
But there's something else.
Something I can't place....
People also keep mentioning the heirs to Silverhollow were two kids....
Whatever happened to them? And why doesn't anyone ever see them anymore? I have a really bad feeling about this....

Both of them are blonde, but Matthew may be leaning towards more of a fiery or orangeish shade. Alphred on the other hand is more of a dirty blonde.

According to him, his brother wouldn't notice or be able to answer about his hairstyle and any differences in colour would not be given a single concern. But if he were to be bald on the other hand.....that would be a different story. Still that seems a tad too extreme.

Due to his brother's vibrant and excitable attitude, it's easy for the more quiet and timid Matthew to be overshadowed. And from what we've seen, he doesn't like it.

Si-Since I don't do much in my free time, I was able to develop it with some of the books scattered around. The shadow isn't like Oscar's other voice. It's not really a voice, per se.
When Matthew tried to harm Alphred on that night, it was because of the pure, concentrated envy that was building up within him. Not a voice in his head telling him to do it. All of it was on his own free-will. He was so tired of everything biting down on him, of being forgotten. So, he put that wrath into action.
As the chance grew closer and closer, the boy became more aware of what he was doing and his conscience began reacting. After realizing the full situation though, he was snapped back into his sense. On that night, Alphred had a a close call.
Of course, the boy doesn't know that at all. He thinks that the treasure rumour was just a fun game.
Matthew knows it wasn't.
Out of the sheer terror and disgust, he created a dissociation between
himself and the 'Matthew' on that day. Something similar to an alternate persona. The Matthew he was was a pure and untainted child. That Matthew could never, ever do anything wrong. After all, he was a kid. Kids don't think about killing or murdering or anything like that! The other Matthew is the one who did it....
The other Matthew is the one who was tainted and bloodthirsty! That Matthew was like Alphred in the way that he was strong and confident ! That Matthew could have been who he would have been if 'he' had become Al and succeeded at his goals. But that Matthew was also... better than his Al. That Matthew was also cunning, smart and patient. He didn't have any of the faults that he hated in Al... only the good stuff....

It was perfect.
The perfect Matthew.
The perfect Al.

Instead, it became a remorseful, resentful and angry little reminder of his faults.
But that Matthew... That Matthew was naughty! He was a bad child, one who shouldn't be listened to. Right? So anyway, everything that shadow said was a lie!
As his mind began to work in overdrive, the pure trauma of the earlier event hit him. He was a kid... who tried to kill someone. His brother of all people!
Haha... but that wasn't him....
That was the other... Matthew. That was his shadow.
Eventually, the poor child couldn't take it and began to hallucinate. From a simple dissociation, that shadow became a 'real' person. It became someone he could see, touch and smell. But, it only came when he was all alone on nights like the one the 'incident' had happened. Like a shadow.... it was always there..... Whether when he was about to drift off in bed after thinking or in the bathroom ( which gave some pretty awkward moments and lines)
But no one else could see it! His explanation? The real Matthew was never seen. And only when the real Matthew became perfect and blocked out his shadow thus defeating it, would he finally leave him alone. At least, that's what Matthew thought.
Until then, the shadow was only visible to him.
He would have no other escape.
Even in dreams, he could track him down.

- In dreams, the shadow is its strongest. When he's hallucinating while awake, it's just a nuisance. A freaky nuisance, but one nonetheless.

Why does everything go wrong? Why are bad things always happening? Being less optimistic than a certain airheaded hero, the boy always tends to question himself and the things around him. When you live in a world filled with one misfortune after another, it gets hard to be able to stay.... hopeful.... about anything. After all, how much more can they take?

But, Matt always finds a certain comfort when his suspicions and thoughts turn out to be correct. Not only does it not paint him in a bad light (though that is important to the kid) it also means they have another day to continue living. Being the closest thing he can be too hopeful, the child is able to relax from his constant worrying and thinking. Of course, that feeling only lasts for a while. But one must admit that it's nice to be able to calm down once in a while.

As problematic as he tends to be with Al, one cannot deny that the two hold at least a slight affection for one another. Being alone with his brother when neither are doing anything dangerous or difficult is one of the moments that young Matthew enjoys experiencing, even if Matthew does feel envy for the older of the pair. The reason he enjoys those moments of silence between them are, because it makes him feel as if nothing bad ever happened. In that little moment, the carriage never crashed. And.... He never lost his real brother.

Because really, he's pretty advanced at thinking with what they've gone through.... How couldn't he be when all he had at his disposal was his mind? Some people his age and near it just don't understand how stupid their mistakes can be! It's all been done before.... Right? And the solution is right there! Anyone could see it!
He'll go off in his little world, thinking ' I told you so! I knew I was right' and smile smugly to himself while the situation outside gets worse and worse without him realizing. And by the time he notices something go wrong? Yep, it'll be too late to change anything. This makes any advice that he gave previously completely useless or null.
For someone so outwardly timid, he can honestly be an arrogant, self-centered, self-loving arse inwardly at times. Especially when the person he's trying to out-prove is a person he got into an argument with earlier.
Though part of being a know-it-all is the fear to be wrong. If what he says isn't correct or offensive, what will other people say about him? What will they think? Will they hold it against him? Will they think all the things he said is wrong? This leads to his next major flaw.

But what happens when Al disagrees? Well, Matt is left optionless. He doesn't have the strength or stubborn and naive bravery to rush into any situation on his own! He can't try to pull off unimaginable feats without 'consulting' logic. What are the chances that he can get them food? Well, that'll depend if he can find someone to sell them some. But then what if they don't have enough money?
So many possible flaws..... How can he surpass any of them? And what will happen if he can't. At that moment, Matt will freeze up and stop. Is he already wrong? Has he messed up again? No!No!No! He can't have messed up!
By then, Al will have taken over and fixed everything for him.... just like he always does...... After all, Al's so dependable...... He can't be wrong....

Too bad he can't actually pull off any of them on his own. But that's what Al's role in their duo is. Matt thinks; Al does. Matthew doesn't mind though, he's fine with that setup. They both get to do with what they specialize in.
But what happens when Al disagrees? Well, Matt is left optionless. He doesn't have the strength or stubborn and naive bravery to rush into any situation on his own! He can't try to pull off unimaginable feats without 'consulting' logic. What are the chances that he can get them food? Well, that'll depend if he can find someone to sell them some. But then what if they don't have enough money?
So many possible flaws..... How can he surpass any of them? And what will happen if he can't. At that moment, Matt will freeze up and stop. Is he already wrong? Has he messed up again? No!No!No! He can't have messed up!
By then, Al will have taken over and fixed everything for him.... just like he always does...... After all, Al's so dependable...... He can't be wrong....

[Almost unnervingly quiet]
With his habit of keeping to himself, he can seem cold in comparison to his brother. Ah...Al. Always smiling, grinning and laughing so genuinely....to the point that his innocence hurts.
But Matthew's not like that. He's more quiet and timid, only talking when he needs to and when it can help. He just watches everything go by; he waits for things to show opportunities and chances. You see unlike loud and brash Alphred, Matthew's more patient. Yes, Matthew can wait for things to look up. As a result, he doesn't speak much. He hardly forms relationships with other people, because he's never been the type to be able to continue conversations. But he can't show people that... They'll laugh at him. So, he remains silent and almost frigid. When people invite him to play, he'll smile sadly and refuse. Some say he's never even stepped out of the orphanage since the 'incident'!
You know, some people find it unnerving. But Al doesn't think anything's wrong! Matt is his brother! And Matt needs him!
...Still, people keep asking questions. How is someone so young already so mature and calculating? Where's that childish innocence seen so much in his sibling?
Well Al doesn't have any traumatizing, horrifying nightmares that can make one wish to lock himself in a room and cry to sleep only to to be haunted again by the same imagery, now does he?

I have a bit of a....errr....stammering problem. I'm not as good at conversing as my brother, if you may have noticed. While he rambles on and on openly, I prefer to keep track of what I say. I try to think before I talk and that causes me to pause a lot. I-I'm....not always sure about if what I'm saying is correct either so, I also normally ask for confirmation a lot ( right, correct, etc).
Sometimes, I don't even say anything at all because I don't want to make a fool out of myself....

Before I go to bed, I make sure there's still one light open and one person awake. I close all the doors, shut the blinds and check the closet for safety measures. But most importantly, I put my bear on the bed first. I tuck it in nice and tight underneath the covers to make sure it won't fall out.

Still, sometimes he's too much. He can't see when other people are mad at him; he ignores the help he's given; he overworks himself, he's selfish; he's an attention hog; he doesn't listen to common sense; I don't think he has common sense; he thinks the world always revolves around him; he takes the blame for EVERYTHING; he's too clingy or he doesn't care at all; he's there too much and tries to control everything or he leaves too often..... ....Those are the things I hate about him.... But I can't get myself to loathe him completely for it. In fact, I used to be jealous of him because of those things...
I hated him for the things he had.... for what he was....for what I wanted and didn't have.
I would feel that I wasn't a good enough brother for him; people would look at me with fake disgust and joke " Matthew, you're so lucky to have a brother like Al. What would you do without him?" They'd laugh like they were joking but.... I know they meant it. They all thought that as soon as Al grew older or tired of me, he'd forget about his little brother and leave me to die.
Sometimes, I still expect it to happen.
When he sneaks out, I stay up all night wondering if he's going to come back again the next morning.
Will I find the bed next to mine empty?
All that time, I can't do anything but cry.
